What Patients Usually Mean by "Full Sedation"

Most people who say "full sedation" are picturing one of two things:

•      Asleep through the whole appointment. No memory of the procedure. Wake up at the end, go home with someone driving.

•      Deeply relaxed without being aware of what's happening. Technically conscious, but detached from the experience.

Both are real options. The first is general anesthesia or deep IV sedation. The second is moderate IV sedation. The difference matters mostly for the anesthesia provider — for you, the experience is similar.

What to Ask When You're Calling Around

1.   "Who provides the sedation?" The right answer is a board-certified anesthesiologist, a dental anesthesiologist, or a CRNA. The dentist providing both treatment and sedation is workable for lighter levels but isn't ideal for true "full" sedation.

2.   "What level of sedation are you offering me?" Nitrous, oral pill, IV, or general anesthesia. The terms aren't interchangeable.

3.   "Will I be asleep or just relaxed?" "Asleep" is a meaningful distinction. Get a direct answer.

4.   "Is the sedation performed in your office?" In-office sedation is more comfortable and convenient. Hospital-based sedation is rarely needed for routine dentistry.

5.   "What does it cost, and what does insurance cover?" Sedation is often billed separately from the dental work itself. Get a written estimate.

How Our In-Office IV Sedation Actually Works

1.   You come in for a pre-sedation consult — health review, medication list, fasting instructions.

2.   On the day of your appointment, the anesthesia clinician from Elite Anesthesia places an IV and starts the medication.

3.   Within a few minutes, you're asleep or deeply relaxed. Vital signs are monitored continuously.

4.   The dentist performs the work — sometimes multiple procedures combined into one visit.

5.   The medication is stopped when the work is done. You wake up over the next 15–30 minutes.

6.  Your driver takes you home. Most patients are back to normal the next morning.

What Full Sedation Lets You Get Done

•      Multiple crowns and fillings in one visit instead of three or four.

•      Surgical extractions plus immediate implant placement.

•      Catch-up restorative work after years of avoiding the dentist.

•      Wisdom tooth removal in-office without a hospital trip.

•      Long, complex cases that would be exhausting to do awake.

What Full Sedation Doesn't Mean

•      Less anesthetic in the gum. We still use local anesthetic to keep nerves quiet during the procedure.

•      Permission to skip the pre-sedation evaluation. Health screening is essential for safety.

•      Driving yourself home. Non-negotiable — even if you feel fine.

•      Avoiding all post-procedure soreness. The teeth still know they had work done.

Logistics Worth Knowing
