Can You Be Asleep for a Root Canal? Yes, Here's How

A root canal can absolutely be done while you're asleep. At Elite Dental Studio, IV sedation provided by Elite Anesthesia lets anxious patients sleep through the entire procedure — including the parts they've heard horror stories about. You arrive nervous. You leave with the root canal done and very little memory of it.

Why a Sedated Root Canal Makes Sense

Root canals have a reputation problem. Modern root canals are usually no more uncomfortable than getting a filling, but fear of them runs deep. For patients who've been postponing one because of anxiety, sedation often turns a multi-year avoidance into a one-day fix.

There are also clinical situations where sedation is genuinely helpful, not just for comfort:

•      Molar root canals, which take longer and require more access.

•      Re-treatments of a tooth that's had a prior root canal.

•      Patients who have trouble getting numb with local anesthetic alone — sometimes a sign of inflammation around the tooth.

•      Patients with severe gag reflexes that interfere with the rubber dam used in root canals.

•      Patients combining a root canal with other work (crown prep, multiple fillings) in one visit.

How a Sedated Root Canal Works

1.   Pre-sedation visit. Health review, medication list, fasting instructions. We check that you're a candidate.

2.   Day of treatment. An anesthesia clinician from Elite Anesthesia places an IV and starts the sedation. Within minutes, you're asleep or deeply relaxed.

3.   Local anesthesia. Even though you're asleep, the dentist still numbs the tooth and surrounding area. This keeps nerves quiet during treatment and reduces post-procedure soreness.

4.   The root canal. The dentist removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them. Often the crown prep is started at the same visit.

5.   Wake-up. The sedation is stopped. You wake over 15–30 minutes, with vital signs monitored the whole time.

6.   Recovery. Your driver takes you home. Plan for a quiet rest of the day.

What You'll Remember

Honestly, very little. Most patients remember walking in, the IV going in, and then waking up at the end. The procedure itself — sometimes 90 minutes or more — feels like a few seconds. That's exactly the point. Anxiety has nothing to fix on if there's no experience to remember.

Aftercare for a Sedated Root Canal

•      Eat soft foods for the rest of the day. Avoid chewing on the treated side.

•      Take any prescribed medications — usually an antibiotic if there was active infection, plus ibuprofen for soreness.

•      Mild tenderness for 2–5 days is normal. Sharp pain or swelling means call us.

•      A permanent crown is usually placed 2–4 weeks later, once the tooth has settled.

Common Questions

Will insurance cover the sedation portion?

Sedation is sometimes covered by medical insurance when medically indicated (severe anxiety with avoidance history, special healthcare needs, or specific clinical reasons). For most patients, the sedation portion is out of pocket — we provide a written estimate before treatment.

Can I sleep through the crown afterward too?

Yes. In many cases we combine the root canal and the crown prep into one sedation visit, saving you the second appointment.

Is sleep dentistry the same as general anesthesia?

Close, but not identical. IV sedation is usually "twilight" sleep — deeply relaxed, often unaware, breathing on your own. General anesthesia is fully unconscious. For most root canals, IV sedation is what's used.
