Can You Be Asleep for a Crown? What IV Sedation Makes Possible

You can be asleep for a crown and often, you can have several crowns done in one sedated visit. At Elite Dental Studio, restorative work under IV sedation is one of our most-requested services. Patients who've been delaying multiple crowns because the thought of three or four separate appointments feels overwhelming can complete the whole plan in a single day, asleep through the work, with anesthesia care provided by Elite Anesthesia.

Why Crowns Are a Good Fit for Sedation

Crowns take time. A typical crown appointment is 60–90 minutes for the prep and impression, then another 30–60 minutes a few weeks later for delivery. Multiple crowns in the same arch can add up to many hours of chair time. For anxious patients, that's a lot of awake time in a dental chair.

Sedation collapses the experience. One sedated visit can include:

•      Multiple crown preparations on adjacent teeth.

•      Impressions or digital scans of the prepped teeth.

•      Placement of temporary crowns.

•      Bite adjustments to make sure everything fits together.

•      Other restorative work in the area — fillings, replacement of old restorations, even a root canal if needed.

Final crown delivery a few weeks later is usually a much shorter, quieter appointment — and many patients prefer to do that one awake.

What Sedated Crown Work Looks Like

1.   Pre-sedation consult. We confirm you're a candidate, review your health, and map out the work.

2.   Day of the visit. IV started, sedation begins. You're asleep within minutes.

3.   Local anesthesia. The dentist still numbs the teeth being worked on — this keeps nerves quiet and reduces post-procedure soreness.

4.   Crown preps. Each tooth is shaped to receive its custom crown. Digital scans or impressions are taken.

5.   Temporaries. Custom temporary crowns are placed and adjusted. You leave with functional teeth that day.

6.   Recovery. Wake-up over 15–30 minutes; driver takes you home.

7.   Delivery appointment. Two to four weeks later, the final crowns are tried in, adjusted, and cemented. Usually quick and comfortable, often done without sedation.

Who Should Consider Sedated Crown Work

•      Anyone with significant dental anxiety facing multiple crowns.

•      Patients who've been postponing major restorative workfor years.

•      Patients with a strong gag reflex — crown impressions are a common trigger.

•      People with limited time who want to consolidate visits.

•      Patients combining crowns with extractions, implants, or other surgical work.

What to Expect Afterward

•      Soft foods for the rest of the day. Most patients return to normal eating within a day or two.

•      Mild soreness in the gums around the prepped teeth is normal for 2–4 days.

•      Temporary crowns feel different than final crowns — slightly bulkier, sometimes sensitive to cold. This is expected and temporary.

•      If a temporary comes off (it sometimes happens, especially on back teeth), call us to re-cement it.

Common Questions

How many crowns can you do in one sedation visit?

Realistically, 2–8 crowns in a single sedated visit is common. The exact number depends on tooth condition, location in the mouth, and the planned procedure time. We map this out before sedation day so there are no surprises.

Will I be able to chew normally that day?

Light chewing on the other side, yes. Avoid chewing directly on the prepped teeth until the final crowns are cemented.

What does it cost?

Sedation costs are separate from the crowns themselves and depend on the length of the appointment. We provide a written estimate that covers the sedation, the crowns, and any other work being done in the same visit.
